Final Destination Review Fail.

Man, this is what I'm talking about. Reviewers trying to be funny instead of just sticking to reviewing the movie.

So I see a review for Final Destination 5. Now let me preface this by saying, I know what the fuck The Final Destination series is all about. I'm under no illusions of what or what not it is.

I don't expect anyone to say anything about it being "cutting edge" or "breaking new ground" or whatever. It's the fifth installment of a horror series, at this point it's lucky to get a theatrical release.

That being said. I at least want an honest review. So I click on Julia Brown's review and man, I don't even get to the review before I want chuck a box set of the FD series at her smug picture.

You see this person tries to be funny. This Julia Brown writes "humorous" captions underneath all the photos from the film that are sprinkled throughout the review.

Unfortunately, THEY ARE FROM THE WRONG FUCKING MOVIE. In Julia's rush to get her review posted with snarky photo comments, she pulled photos from The Final Destination (the fourth movie) NOT FD5.

Captions such as "Is it just us or does every image from Final Destination 5 make it look like a cheap Michael Bay knock-off?" "Help! We're in Final Destination 5!" and '"Which way to the Transformers 3 set?" Nicholas d'Agosto and Jacqueline MacInnes Wood in Final Destination 5.' are posted with pictures, unless used in several flashback scenes, ARE CLEARLY FROM THE PREVIOUS MOVIE.

She even credits the actors incorrectly. No, that’s not Nicholas d'Agosto, that’s Bobby Campo. Did you or did you not see the movie?

This is what is wrong with some reviewers. Nowadays we are getting inundated with failed comedians who still think they are funny. Now, let’s take a step back, what if those WERE images from Final Destination 5...the captions still wouldn’t be fucking funny. But it would make this review look less of a joke.

So how was the actual review? Man, I don’t know. It’s hard to seriously take a movie review from someone who posts pictures from the wrong movie and credits the wrong actors.

Kill Your Cash! New Horror DVDs for 12.29.2009

New Horror DVDs making their debut this week are a couple of high profile movies.

First up is the Megan Fox entry that most either really loved or really hated, Jennifer’s Body. Personally I thought it was ‘just ok’. Would I buy it? Well, it wouldn’t be the first thing on the shelf I would grab but I think it’s not a bad addition to the collection. The dialogue mat be little much, but I digress.

The one I’m sure most people are curious to get their hands on is the surprise hit, Paranormal Activity. Either you haven’t seen it yet and wanna see if it lives up to the hype or you really dug it and wanna add it to your collection. There is an alternate ending on the disc which if you have not seen, is pretty cool. For the real fan there is a Limited Collector's Edition which also hooks you up with a T-shirt and an authentic film cell from the movie.

Night of the Creeps also hits DVD as well as Stan Helsing a fun movie which features the always stunning Diora Baird. I already took a look at the movie and a review will be posted in a bit.

CABIN FEVER 2 Needs A Flu Shot

I enjoyed the original Cabin Fever, so being the sequel junkie that I am, I ventured to the screening of the Ti West directed film at Screamfest. Alas, Cabin Fever 2 is no Cabin Fever.

Following the events of the first movie, the virus is alive and has found its way into a batch of bottled water that’s being shipped to a local high school. Coincidently it’s the day of the Prom and as the party gets going, the virus kicks in. A military squad of some sort quarantine the school leaving all the prom goers to be ravaged by the virus and mostly die off camera. In the midst of this, one of the students, John (Noah Segan) tries to get out with his romantic interest Cassie (Alexi Wasser).

That’s pretty much the main thrust of the movie. There is also an epilogue set in strip joint for no apparent reason and a cartoon showing the spread of the virus. A nice WTF.

Cabin Fever 2 attempts to be an over the tops comedic shockfest and while it is ripe with gross out moments, it fails to be funny. In this movie things just happen. No build up, no tension, no lead up, nothing. It’s Just presented as though random ideas were filmed and strung together to be called a movie.

Noah Segan as John does have some nice moments and does bring some reality to the movie as man who has been in love with a girl who, of course, is with the resident school douche. But other than that the actors are there just to be the next splatter moment which becomes redundant.

I wasn’t given any reason to care for these characters or what happened to them. Cabin Fever 2 is really disconnecting and I was left watching a bad highlight reel of red corn syrup splattered on actors for an hour and a half.

AMC’s Fear Fest is In Full Swing!

Every year at Halloween the AMC channel devotes itself to horror with its Fear Fest. This year’s annual tradition started on October 23rd and is set to continue for the rest of the month. Slated for showing are horror flix like Halloween (of course), Return of the Living Dead, the Alien quadrilogy and many more. A full schedule can be found on the channel’s website amctv.com/fearfest. Also on the site is random fun like polls, quizzes, tournaments and more.

So settle in for a week of watching horror movies, it’s going to be fun!

SAW VI Slices Up Nice!

The latest entry in the Saw franchise delivers some nice shocks, good story and of course TRAPS! Directed by Kevin Greutert, Saw VI starts off with a bang as the opening prologue sets the pace for a nice ride that flirts with getting over the top gory but chooses not to cross the line. The main thrust of the story revolves around a medical insurance businessman whose history of choosing the bottom line over human life comes back to haunt him. Played by Peter Outerbridge, William Easton is set through a series of traps and games that put him in the position of having to face fatal decisions he was flippantly making, but now with people he knows and works with. One of the last lessons left by the deceased serial (but not really) killer Jigsaw. While Easton is maneuvering through the traps, Jigsaw’s apprentice Lieutenant Hoffman is on the verge of being uncovered by the authorities. A lot of flashbacks are involved as loose ends from the last 3 movies are tied up, putting together many of the puzzle pieces.

The centerpiece of the Saw movies are the traps, and in this one the tradition continues quite well. My favorite was the “pound of flesh” trap from the opening sequence. I’d like a little bit more of the “what would YOU do” type scenarios as one tends to get more involved with it than the “how will this person escape” type. But still, the traps in Saw VI hold up well and are inventive.

One of the chief complaints of the latest entries has been the almost non-existent presence of the commanding Tobin Bell. It seems like he was well missed enough that he has more screen time in this one and it is really noticed. The other actors don’t have too much to do but they dutifully carry their roles well enough to keep the momentum going. Noticeably, Costas Mandylor as Hoffman is there just to set up the traps, not to give reasoning behind them (that is left to Bell). So pretty much the main villain is there without much to do.

Another fault of the last couple of movies were if you were not well versed in all the installments you were pretty much left scratching your head. While Saw VI still needs you to be somewhat familiar with its predecessors, it can work (to a degree) on its own at the same time cleaning up the questions left over from the previous Saws. Though the cliffhanger ending is a pain, it’s expected as Saw VII has already been announced.

Saw VI is a nice Halloween movie that follows through on the promises of scares, tension and lots of blood. Check it out.

Dead in 3 Days hits from Dimension Extreme looks like this weeks pick for me even though it's premise sounds kinda "The Ring" meets "I Know What You Did Last Summer" type of way. Cool kids receive calls that they will be dead in the 3 days, and then are killed. There ya go.

Friday the 13th fever is all over the place in anticipation of the new movie and this Tuesday is a big day for fans of the franchise as several DVDs are dropping this week.

First up: Deluxe Editions of the first three movies, Friday the 13th, Friday the 13th Pt. 2 and Friday the 13th Pt.3 3-D! Yes! Part 3 is in 3-D! Also, a box set that contains the last three in the series, the New Line set, called The Jason Slasher Collection. It contains Jason Goes To Hell, Jason X and Freddy Vs. Jason.

My Bloody Valentine – Special Edition

Just released on DVD by Paramount/Lionsgate is Special Edition of the cult classic My Bloody Valentine. This Special Edition returns deleted footage back into the movie that fans of this flick have been clamoring for.

For those not in the know My Bloody Valentine is a horror film that falls in the slasher genre. Although it has many obvious cues taken from Halloween and Friday the 13th, MBV is still able to find its way to becoming an enjoyable film.

The story is that 20 years ago, on Valentine’s Day, some miners were killed due to the negligence of their co-workers who were more interested in the annual dance than their safety. One lone survivor, Harry Warden, goes on a murderous rampage and slaughters the revelers. Now, since Harry’s murder spree, the town no longer celebrates Valentine’s Day. But Harry has become more urban legend than threat that some young adults are not taking seriously and choose to throw a Valentine’s Day party anyway. This act of defiance is met with a series of fatal endings for these people culminating with a mine shaft massacre.

My Bloody Valentine could have easily failed, but its energy and sharp thrills keep one entertained. The kills are not overly graphic in the theatrical version and while footage has been reinserted for this special edition, they are still interesting without crossing the line, well except for the eyeball part, argh. LOL

Clearly a win for this early 80’s entry and a definite "must add" to your Horror DVD collection. Enough suspense to keep the casual viewer invested and enough blood to satisfy the gorehounds.

Special Features include:
Bloodlust: My Bloody Valentine and the Rise of the Slasher Film (20 min 35 sec)
This mini-doc starts out really good with an interesting look at the birth of the Slasher genre. While it heavily plays MBV’s importance, it still provides some interesting notes, especially from Adam Rockoff (author of Going to Pieces: The Rise and Fall of the Slasher Films). Unfortunately about halfway through it becomes a commercial for My Bloody Valentine 3D (in theaters now…of course).

Bloodlines: An Interactive Horror Film History
An interesting overview of the Horror sub-genres. A great primer for those not as well versed in the many facets of the Horrorverse.

Deleted Footage with Director, Cast and Special Effects Designer Introductions – The deleted footage can be watched as part of the movie or separately. Director George Mihalka talks about the movies violence and the impact that John Lennon’s death had, the special effects and more.

There are several spots where additional footage has been added. From the deleted scenes menu they are:

When it comes to the actual additional footage there is a slight change in the quality of the film but it is still great to watch.

While this DVD does right by the movie, the extras seem to be somewhat unfocused but fun. If you already have My Bloody Valentine, I’m sure you are going to want this for the restored footage, if you do not have this movie then by all means grab this DVD. This is a great addition to your horror collection.

The WICKED Scores 19 AVN Award Nominations!

The 2009 AVN Award nominations have been announced and one movie really stands out with a whopping 19 award nominations. That movie is Wicked Pictures’ own The Wicked! Masterfully directed by contract director Michael Raven and starring the stunning Kaylani Lei, The Wicked was shot earlier in the year and made it’s DVD debut this fall.

New Smash Cut Poster Featuring SASHA GREY!

The latest poster for the upcoming horror movie Smash Cut has been unveiled. Prominently featured is the movie’s star and 2008 AVN Performer of the Year winner, Miss Sasha Grey! Grey stars as April Carson, a TV personality whose older sister, stripper, has been murdered. To find out whom the killer is she goes undercover as an actress in a horror film.

The poster hit horror news sites this past weekend and has been generating a buzz. The poster depicts the beautiful Grey in a nurse’s outfit holding severed hands. The plot of the movie revolves around a falling filmmaker who inadvertently kills Carson’s older sister. To cover up the crime he uses the body as a prop in his latest movie. But as with any horror movie, one body is not enough.

Smash Cut is directed by Lee Demarbre (Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter) and also stars Horror luminaries David Hess (The Last House on the Left) and Michael Berryman (The Devil's Rejects, The Hills Have Eyes). The horror/comedy has a 2009 scheduled release.

DDP to Distribute Two Issues Of ‘HACK/SLASH’ Outside Of DIAMOND

Chicago, IL. (October 5, 2008) – In a show of support for its top-selling creator-owned title, Devil’s Due Publishing will distribute the previously solicited Hack/Slash issues 16 and 17 directly, rather than through Diamond Comic Distributors. The decision follows Diamond’s receipt of a Cease and Desist letter regarding the issues from an unknown, recently registered company, Re-Animator, LLC, in connection with Dynamite Entertainment’s Nick Barrucci. Hack/Slash #15 will be available for re-order as well.

A property dispute has arisen between Brian Yuzna (the producer and owner of the Re-Animator film franchise for over twenty years) and a recently registered company, Re-Animator LLC over the rights to the Re-Animator logo in various merchandise categories, which appears in the current Hack/Slash story arc, “Cassie & Vlad Meet the Re-Animator.”

"Devil's Due have done a fantastic job of keeping the spirit of the Re-Animator films alive in the Hack/Slash cross-over,” says Yuzna “It has been a pleasure to collaborate with such a talented crew. And I am proud to be working with them after the admirable stand they have taken in the face of economic coercion. This company exemplifies the independent spirit of the genre film and comics community. It may seem crazy to Re-Animator fans to think that a company that had nothing to do with the classic films could actually claim ownership of the "Re-Animator" brand and threaten to stop anyone else from creating comics, films or merchandise with the word 'reanimator' or 're-animator' in it- even the actual producer of the films that created the brand—but in this wacky world that is exactly what has happened.”

The decision to distribute the issues outside of Diamond was not easily made. “We deliberated internally long and hard,” says DDP President Josh Blaylock, “But this was in good conscience not something I felt we could roll over and just accept. I’ve reviewed the facts, spoken to copyright, corporate and entertainment attorneys, and resolved that this, in my own personal opinion, is a ridiculous bully tactic that only hurts Tim [Seeley] and all of the creators who work so hard to make Hack/Slash the great book that it is and abuses the Diamond policy of staying out of legal issues.”

“Unfortunately, a dispute over the publishing rights in regards to the Re-Animator characters has arisen between DDP and Re-Animator LLC, and we have been advised by Diamond’s attorney’s to not distribute issues #16 and #17 of the series Hack/Slash, plus process any additional reorders for #15 as well. It is our understanding that DDP will be self distributing the issues previously mentioned, and beginning with Hack/Slack #18, will once again be distributed by Diamond,” said Bill Schanes, Vice President of Purchasing for Diamond.

The situation comes during a banner year for Hack/Slash, which has included a sell-out of the series’ first Omnibus collection, the addition of screenwriter Justin Marks to the Hack/Slash film in development at Rogue pictures with director Todd Lincoln, and a nomination in the category of “Best Comic Book” for the 2008 Spike TV Scream Awards.
